Somebody To Love. I Need A Karaoke Song. Queen.

Just like a boy scout, you need to be prepared. And I'm not prepared...if I walk into a bar sometime and karaoke is happening and people are like, "Come on Zibbs! You need to get up there and do a song!"

I'm really unprepared. I've only done Karaoke in public twice. The first time was in Media PA after being out for a friend's birthday. We had come back from Philly in a limo (classy) and everyone was pretty fired up. A group of us did The Weight - by The Band.

It was one of the worst things you ever heard. They were so throwing me off. Terrible.

The second time was in China. Karaoke is HUGE in China. So we were out with some factory reps and interpreters and they took us to this karaoke place. It was a freestanding building just dedicated to Karaoke. We had our own room. I forget what song I did but it was a Motown song. They clapped like crazy but it was not a great performance.

So here's a song that I might need to practice - Queen's, "Somebody to Love" as performed my George Michael. You know..so I'm prepared and all.

Oh yeah - so let me know what song is an easy one to sing. But it needs to be one that I can showcase myself. And I don't want a song that has a lot of intrumental in the middle.

So what are some of the standards?

My "go to" karaoke song is Squeeze's "Tempted". It's all I do, and I do it well.

Well...at least I THINK I do- if I'm singing karaoke, it means I'm probably drunk.

Whiskey M - will add that to the list. And I remember how you love Elvis Costello - I saw Squeeze with Elvis C back in the day at the Tower Theater.

Can you actually sing? If not, please don't butcher that Queen song. It's beautiful.

Every time I've ever been to a karaoke bar, someone has done "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond or "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks.

War Movie by The Jefferson Airplane, but you're probably too young to know that one.

I would recommend starting with the Happy Birthday song and for the big finish For He's A Jolly Good Fellow. That way, you win the crowd for sure. Or, have George Michael drive his car through the bar wall if you're not doing well, then make your getaway.

The ONLY time I've ever done karaoke was at my own dorm party 8 years ago. I did Fat Bottom Girls and I made the rocking world go round.

How about a country song? For some reason those are easier to sing. I tend to go with anything by Loretta Lynn or Tammy Wynette myself. Hank Williams, "Hey Goodlookin" would be great for you because you can ham it up with some yodeling and also pick a table full of ladies to sing it to.

How a bout 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover? It's not very challenging, but it's a crowd pleaser.

Very good suggestions.

If you can pull it off, the theme from Shaft always goes over well.

Freddie Mercury and George Michael as karaoke inspiration. Is there something you want to tell us?

PHD - yeah it is kinda gay.

..and by the way I heard "Under the Boardwalk" when I was out and about today and that is added to my list.

I always choose either "You Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morisette or "Hopelessly Devoted To You", Olivia Newton-John. Schizophrenic, I know.
