Sesame Street is 40! Special Thoughts. Big Bird is Faggy.

Wow. Sesame Street is 40 years old today. Here are a few of my random thoughts about the show. What are yours?

- I always hated Big Bird. He should be called Big Dummy.

- Maria was hot*.

- Why was Mr Hooper such a crabby a-hole? When he died, I did zero mourning.

- Coolest characters: Grover, Kermit and The Yip Yips.

- Best Sponsor: The letter "W"

- Catchiest song: "I've Got Two Eyes - And They're Both The Same Size" (A clear smash on pirates)

- Jump the Shark moment: The arrival of Elmo.

- Best Sesame Street Parody: The Burt Is Evil website. It's been around for years. Check it out here. You've got to see this site.

*Look at that picture of Maria. What does that remind you of? Huh? Huh?

..and I hate Oscar too.

Yes, Grover IS the coolest. Maria still looks pretty damn good these days. And my sister and I used to play a game called Mr. Hooper in my grandparent's garage (which magically transformed into his store). It somehow involved a stool/chair combo that I inherited. Yay for me!

I'm pretty sure Oscar called Big Bird "Big Dummy" in Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. Best Xmas movie of all time for kids. I have it memorized word for word...no lie. Watched it every year since it debuted (1978?). If you haven't seen it, it's a must. Mr. Hooper. David. Maria. Susan. Bob. Kermit. Grover. Snuffleupagus! And a bunch of kids who, like me, are in their 30s now.

Seriously. Fabulous.

I agree the Yip Yips rule!

Kristen - Next to tag, I'd bet that playing Mr Hooper's Garage is the most popular kid's game.

Dr Zibbs said...

ChesterCo_PA - I never heard of that. I'll have to look that one up.

Agreed. I'd teach you how to play some time, but you have to have a really old birdcage and a Buick Electra or it won't work.

I LOVED Grover. I had a book called "The Monster at the End of This Book." The book consisted of Grover trying to convince you not to turn the pages because there was a monster at the end of the book. He tried everything, including bricking the pages shut, to keep you from turning the pages and thereby getting closer to the monster.

In the end it turned out that Grover himself was the monster at the end of the book. Whew.

Sorry for any spoilers.

Big Bird might have been dumb, but can you imagine if he ever got angry?

That would be one big fucking pissed-off bird!

A book featuring Grover? Gwen I'm sure no such book exists but you sure do have an imagination.

Earl - a shot to the nuts would take that big baby down in 2 seconds.

It used to frustrate me that no one ever saw Mr. Snuffalupagus. It was too f'ing convenient that he managed to leave just before somebody arrived - you could never count on the guy.

I would totally put my Mr. Noodle in Maria's Snuffleupagus.

True story.

I can't believe you left off "Best Duo Single" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdJZgDadUlE

Oscar The Grouch was a massive influence on me in my formative years. Explains a lot.

I remember having nightmares about Bert when I was about 3. I used to dream that he'd pop up beside my bed with these big evil neon yellow eyes and I'd end up running, screaming into my parents room.

I loved the typewriter. And the groovy pinball. "one, two, three, four,five...six, seven, eight, nine, ten...eleven,tweeeeee-eeee-eee-eee-eeeelve."

Dr Zibbs said...

Artful Kisser - LOOK OUT! BERT'S BEHIND YOU!

Naa. I'm just kiddin'

NO! THERE HE IS NOW!

Naa. Still kiddin'.

I never liked Big Bird either. Cookie Monster was always my favorite, followed by Grover and The Count.

Dr Zibbs said...

Beckeye - I was always torn over the Count. Sometimes I liked him, other times I didn't.

I also liked Oscar the best. Also, Bert, because he was grumpy. And I liked it that the adults didn't believe in Mr. Snuffleupagus. My psyche, in a nutshell.

I loved Grover's near/far act. And the Yip Yip's rule too. Cookie Monster was always my fav though. And there is definitely a book with Grover. I had it and loved it. Do your research, Zibbs. LOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monster_at_the_End_of_This_Book:_Starring_Lovable,_Furry_Old_Grover

Alice - hahaha. I was just messing with my friend Gwen. But she also emailed me a link to that book as well just to prove it to me.

I'm older than Sesame Street. *sigh* But my brother was a big fan (and seven years younger).

I once went to a Henson family wedding and got to dance with the dude who inhabits Big Bird. As I recall, he was short. Anyway, that's one of my major claims to fame. That and the fact that my ass was once in a picture with George Clooney. I know, I know, stop bragging.

I liked the 2 aliens that were checking out/listening to the oldskool telephone ...(searched f/ them on youtube, no luck)
But Bert & Ernie were my favourites too !

Dr Zibbs said...

Dominica - they're the Yip Yips

WendyB that's such a cool anecdote - the first one that is, not the second LOL

Sesame Street was SOOO far ahead of its time...you know with Bert & Ernie's 'special' relationship and all.
