Blog Questions, Spam, Slow Loading Pages and More

And now, some serious questions about blogs.

- Why in Google Analytics does it often say that the total time a reader viewed my blog was zero seconds even though the person left a comment?

- If someone is reading my blog in Google readers, does the visit show up in Google Analytics?

- Why does it sometimes take 2 minutes for my posts to show up in Google Reader and other times it takes 6 hours?

- I like to keep many posts visible on my main blog page. Does anyone have a problem with slow loading of my page (hillbillies with telegraphed rigged Internet connection need not answer).

- I just received 30 plus identical spam comments. I've deleted them all. Is this because I turned off my word verification? I've since turned it back on. I think I know the answer to this one.

- And please add any websites, templates or applications that you use for your blogs.

Thanks.

  1. I don't understand 99% of the information that Google Analytics gives me. It just makes me feel more grown up saying I have it.

  2. one problem with slow loading is the size of your new header image. it's over 500kb -- way too big. slim it down, boy.

  3. i havent looked too much at google analytics honestly. i get most of my stats from gostats.com (which kinda stinks, honesytly)

  5. I Hate the fucking word verification !!
Turn it off or I might not comment anymore.

  6. McGlinch - thanks.

Philly #1 - I've had it off for months and have never gotten spam but I just had to manually delete over 30 huge comments in various posts. Maybe I'll turn it on and off to trick the spammers. As for your comments, I'll send you my address so you can mail your comments to me.

  7. I don't care for Google Analytics, word verification, or anything that isn't porn related.

  8. I hate Google Analytics - but I can tell you that my Sitemeter gives the same 0 seconds info. Most perplexing indeed. As for the word verification, I don't use it and rarely get spammed. Lastly, you page does not load slowly for me.

    Have a great day!

  9. Diva on a Diet - thanks. Since the pages don't load slowly for you that probably means what I've been thinking about McGlinch. He's a hillbilly.

  10. I wondered about the "0 seconds" thing too, so I looked it up. When someone accesses your blog via an RSS feed or similar doohickey, the visit shows up as 0 seconds because technically they are looking at your blog offline after the feed finds it. In other words, you can't find out how long they were there.

  11. Yeah, I think Sky Dad has the right idea. :-)

Dear Doctor, your page does not load slowly for me. I see no problem with it at all. And, as for word verification, sometimes they can be funny, thought-provoking, and, best yet, kinda dirty, so I look forward to them because I never know what I'm going to get. But maybe that's just me.

  12. I use Sitemeter, and it does the same thing...that 0 seconds business. I gave up after awhile trying to figure it all out, so I applaud your efforts.

I don't mind word vers for the same reason as Cora...they make me giggle.

Your site takes no time to load, compared to Poo's, so there's a bonus, eh?

  13. Your SPAM today was different that what I normally see with the word replacement to CHINESE BABY FORMULA or whatever. I have seen that even on sites with word verification on.

Can't say that I use analytics that deep. When you're happy to get 30 hits a day, not that much to analyse.

I too am looking to do a little remodeling (today doesn't count, that's part of the gag, it will be reverting back to normal tomorrow) and would love to find some new templates. Something that affords me a little bit more control over the background, and maybe make the main column wider so I don't rage in silence when every picture I put in truncates.

    You're welcome.

  15. The spam comes because of the ads that you have on your blog now.

(Not really. I just don't like ads on personal blogs.)

  16. Well, it does not take too long to load for me. And I think you probably got your answer about the spam, unfortunately.

  17. I was going to say that if your other readers are anything like me, they may be reading the posts in a reader, then dropping in for a few seconds to comment, but that couldn't be accurate, as it does take at least a few seconds to comment.

    I don't know anything, apparently.

    [wanders off.]

  18. I use Statcounter, which is pretty nice and easy to use. Dunno if Google Reader views show up in it, though it does show a lot of really short visits. Maybe they're put off by the number of words I have.

    No probs loading your page.

The spam comments are the price you pay for fame, Mister Zibbiddy.

  20. I'm sorry, that's me. I never bother to actually READ your posts. I just immediately click on comments and write whatever comes to mind.

Have any of my comments been on topic? Luck I guess.

  21. I don't like spam. My mom used to make me eat it with scrambled eggs.

    Porn is good, though.

I know nothing about the speed of your load.

I know nothing about this 0 of which you speak in reference to the timing of the visiting on the site with the stuff.

    I'm real smart, though.

  22. I 2nd Statcounter. I never did understand that Google Anal...whatever it's called.

  23. I have google analytics but i really dont get it, I use statcounter as many others. I like it very much, its pretty good.

  24. All my blog pages load slowly. That's usually cuz I'm downloading some hot porn, though.

  25. if someone reads your post through a reader it doesn't count as a hit. and the page loading slowly is probably the header image. my blog is dealing with the same shit right now and my designer is suddenly MIA. not cool.

  26. I'm with JJ-stat counter is good. Used it for years with all my sites.

In terms of slow loading times, yes, I have experienced that too, and can't figure out how others have 8,000 links and java scripts on their side bars and still load immediately. I took stuff off the sidebar and it got better. Use pingdom.com to determine your load time. It shows exactly how long each header/side bar items takes to load. Very helpful when I was figuring out what to delete.

In terms of why it takes 6 hours for your posts to show up in Google Reader, this is one for the ages. I posted something recently that took 26 HOURS to show up. I was pretty ticked off.

OK, that's all I got. Thanks for the hilarious blog. :-)
