Confession. I Bought Something At Chess King in 1981.

Whoa! Look at sweet Michael Jacksonish jacket that was available at the Chess King retailer in 1983!

I was always a jeans and flannel shirt guy until about 11th grade. That's when I decided to look inward and try and figure out what the ladies would like to see me wear. That's when I headed down to the local Chess King and opened my wallet and purchased a "stylish shirt" with my own money.

I remember it was blue and white checks and had some weird collar thing going on. But there was loud club music playing so they had to know what they were talking about. Right? (Even though at the time I hated that music.)

So I put it on the first time - unveiling my new look - and my oldest sister says, "Why are you wearing that blouse?"

"A what?"

"That girl's blouse. That's a girl's shirt. You can tell because the buttons are on the opposite side and it's a girl's pattern."

"Shut up!"

"It is!"

I'm not sure if she was just messing with me but I went upstairs and looked in the mirror and came to the conclusion that this was the gayest shirt I ever saw. So I took it off, put my flannel back on - probably over a Doors t-shirt - and returned it to the store.

My new look would have to wait.

  3. I was in uniforms for most of my school days, so I was a totally inept when it came to clothing shopping in my late teens (which is fine, because I hate that shit).

  5. @trinalikeswine. Your sister was right...also the funny thing around the collar was probably a ruffle...the fine clothiers at Chess King should have brought that detail to their client's (in this case, you) attention. Perhaps their alterations department could have rectified the situation and thus made you a loyal client..maybe to this day...who can say for sure?Life really does have a lot of twists and turns...Sorry you missed out on the Thriller Jacket. Could you do the worm? If 'Yes' then It was just as well you didn't make that smart purchase..you would have left red scuff marks on your flooring...

  15. Knowing that a cow died to make that jacket is enough to turn a person vegan.

  17. Did you get any designer jeans to make your butt look good?

  18. Having lived with Zibbs in our college dorm back in the day, I can honeslty let you faithful TBY visitors know that Zibbs was wearing skinny jeans before they were the hot item. And they were TIGHT. I mean , he had trouble walking in them. Kinda like Kramer in that one Seinfeld episode about jeans.

Yup-The Zibbs wardroobe of 1982 consisted of too tight jeans, white leather Converse hightops, high curly red hair and a lightning bolt earring in the left ear while smoking marlboro lights constantly. Why did I hang with this guy????? Shuddddderrrrrr....

  19. Don't feel bad. I bought a pair of pin stripe double pleated slacks from Chess King. I wore the hell out of them. Hopefully there are no pictures.

I suspect 25 years from now, someone will be writing a post about "I once bought something in an Abercrombie Fitch store.
