1975 Clothes Were Sweet! Check Out My Man! Charm Bracelet.

What the?

This is what you get when you search "1975 Fashion". I was in 5th grade then. And even though I never sported one of those hats, the blue shirt on the right looks VERY familiar. I think I had a very similar one for special occasions.

And it reminds me of one Christmas when my parents gave me a charm bracelet to wear on those special occasions. I remember my dad saying, "You see son, men don't really wear jewelry like ladies. You've got your watch, your wedding ring when you get married but that's about it. But these charm bracelets are the new thing. I got mine for a sales conference a few months ago and I get a LOT of compliments for it. It makes you stand out".

When I wore my fancy disco shirt the next time I remember him saying, "Now that's the perfect outfit for the charm bracelet".

So he gets the charm bracelet and tries to show me how it's supposed to be exposed a bit so you can see it over the sleeve. But it shouldn't be on the outside of the sleeve. See what I mean? No? Well either did I because it's impossible to have it both ways.

So he loosened one of the links and the next thing you know it was practically falling off of my hand. He was too frustrated to fix the link so he was like, "Yeah that's it. There you go. That's how you wear it".

I remember feeling like a chick wearing it. I wonder if I still have it in my "Dr Zibbs box from the past" that I keep in my attic. Probably not. I probably chucked it in the woods when I was in 7th grade.

  1. And what are those guys looking at in the picture? You know they're about to start a brawl.

    Or defend their turf.

  2. Here's what I want to know. What charms were on your charm bracelet? A ballerina? A parasol? Maybe a teddy bear?

  3. Stacey - Haha. Well, I guess it wasn't a charm bracelet technically. It had a flat area where my name was engraved in.

You know...THOSE bracelet? I probably blocked out the name of it because it was so traumatic.

  4. ...Hahaha but I do like the idea of a parasol. If I had to pick my other charms they would be:

    A skull

    A sack of wheat.

    A wheel barrow.

  5. OOOO an ID Bracelet! That was my standard boyfriend gift when I was in Junior High. You dated me, you got an ID Bracelet. Those guys could have had a club and made t-shirts: "I went out with Stacey and all I got was an ID Bracelet (and this t-shirt)."

  6. An ID bracelet. That's what it was. I think I'll keep charm bracelet in the title to lure readers in.

  7. I enjoyed this story a lot, but it took me several minutes to stop staring at the hat on that one fella.

  8. Kristen - not unlike the ID bracelet, it's the feather that makes the hat. It's that one small detail.

  9. Is that a feather or some dude's handlebar mustache?

  10. aw... I was really hoping you actually were sporting a charm bracelet. I had already adorned it with: the male symbol, a silver spoon, a mini mood ring, a platform boot and a banana seat bike. An ID bracelet just doesn't have the same wow factor, your dad was WRONG!

  11. Gage - a banana seat bike charm! Hahaha.

  13. I was in 11th grade in 1975, feel better?
These guys look like they're posing for an ad on how to get your *ss kicked at a club.

  14. Too bad you don't have it because it would probably either be a) so incredibly dorky that you would laugh for hours or b) so incredibly cool that you'd wear it for the next ten years.

  15. This reminds me when my mom bought my brother and me matching suits for Easter Sunday - baby blue 3-piece suits with bell-bottom pants. And I had those dress shoes with the thick rubber sole that was shaped like a wave.

    Charmed, I'm sure.

  16. I'm totally getting one of those hats...

I don't care if I was in utero when those things were in fashion.

  17. I SO wish you would share pictures from your old timey Dr. Zibbs box! That would be so much fun!

ID bracelet? For a guy? Uh, no. We didn't do that here on the south side, you'd get your ass kicked for something like that! But good for you, embracing your feminine side at such a tender age!

My banana seat was sparkly red white and blue... bad.ass.

  18. Peggy - embracing my fem side? I didn't have a choice? I was in 5th grade.

And here on the "South Side". Dots a good von!

    ReplyDelete
  19. ..and Peggy I mean "dots a good von" because I think you're as suburbia as me in your upbringing.

Of course now I'm all getto as shit. Jeah! (shows gang sign)

  20. They are about to hand out the ass whooping of the year. Also, I'm pretty sure I had a blind date with the dude on the right.

  21. Steenks - I hear you with the ass whooping. It's happening.

  22. WendyB - I've heard the term "double knit" before and I'm sure it has something to do with the knitting is done twice but...I still don't really know what it means.

  24. its crazy... you've been writing stuff like this for years and years, week after week. I got kind of burned out, got really busy with a new job, but damn it, slopmaster is BACK! thanks for the encouragement Dr. Zibb. You're just what I needed. This is the first blog I've looked at in months!

  25. I love that you did this....not just because I was born in 1975 (although that's pretty cool too) but because I LOVE 70s fashion. Okay, maybe not the charm bracelets (I was a mood ring girl myself.) But the outfits...I adore polyester shirts, pants, whatever. I even have a blue shirt like the guy on the right, which I bought at a thrift store for $1.50.
On a related note, those yellow pants are the exact same color as the shirt my dad wore in my parents' wedding in '72.

  26. Slopmaster - you're one of my fav blogs of all time. You're so honest. Now that you're back in the States you need to join Twitter. You can find me on Twitter under the name @DrZibbs and @fatherKelly . I will promote all that you do as you are an original.

Jez - I would have guessed you're into 70's stuff. (TEASER FOR READERS) Can't wait to post the interview we did this week.

  27. Zibbs: This picture looks like it could be moments before your incredible sketch entitled "Dance Fight" commences...

  28. Doc,

I left catholic school thinking I was going to be cool opening day of entering public high school wearing my platform shoes, silk blue shirt (unbuttoned to the middle of my hariless chest), wearing my cool hip bracelet too. The worst though was when I realized with all this stuff, my Sears tan cord leisure suit took the cake and to this day is what stood out most amongst everyone wearing Led Zep t-shirts and jeans. Now that was me, a quintessential Dork!

  29. Did you wear your charm braclet to charm school?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Scope - No. Just for "special occasions when I was forced to wear it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hey, look. At least it was a charm bracelet. I was forced to wear the toque and mittens (complete with the extra long string that linked them through my jacket sleeves so I wouldn't lose them) my grandmother knitted me for Christmas one year. Green with a tiny ROSE on the front of the hat. Just what every boy wants, right? Devastating.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wandering - Bill Cosby used to call those mittens idiot mittens. For real.

  33. The best part about charm bracelets is being able to say: "No one will ever get me lucky charms." Hhahahahhahahahha.
