What was the first car you bought? Was it a Renault LeCar? A gray one with a roof that opened?
Oh My GOD!!! That was my first car! It looked exactly like that ridiculous brown one pictured above but it was gray. And I'm not lying when I tell you that the previous owner added a tachometer to it. Sweet. Worthless but sweet....Well...sweet to laugh at. By others.
And you've got to see some of the LeCar's they have on the Wikipedia page here.
What are YOUR favorite stories about grey Renault LeCars. Go ahead - share them with us.
Here's one of MY favorite stories: When I got it, my friends dad came out of his house, looked at it and just laughed.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I ever saw one before!
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a muscle car (did I forget to mention that I am and always have been a TOTAL tomboy?). I had a '69 Chevy Nova with headers, racing pins on the hood, glasspak in the exhaust (oh, how my dad loved that!), with a 350 engine and a 400 turbohydromatic transmission.
Vvvroooooom! God how I miss that car!
I never had one of those. But I had a faded black Chevy Cavalier, that had sat in the sun so long, the interior upholstery turned a vaginal shade of pink.
ReplyDeleteBut it smelled like skunky weed, so I didn't mind.
Mine was almost as bad, a 1981 tan 4 door Chevette.
ReplyDeleteWhile I've had five Porsche's during my driving life, it all started with a 1972 Ford Pinto. The rear 1/4 panel was so rusted that the gas tank filler pipe was tied with a piece of rope to the exposed strut. The floor boards were completely rusted out, so a couple of 'No Parking' signs were bolted into place lest it become a Flintstone mobile. Completely falling apart, BUT the POS NEVER had a problem starting. I'd leave the old man, who was never without a joke about my beauty, struggling to get his shiny Chrysler New Yorker started while I just reached in through the window, turned the key, and commenced ice scrapping detail.
ReplyDeleteSold that car a a keg party for $20. True story, Mathdude can vouch.
Chris- your first car was "almost as bad"? Did you take a look at that picture?
ReplyDeleteOMG, my sister had the yellow version! And another sister had a purple Renault (not a Le Car) with a push button ignition. I loved both of them, but not as much as my father's Citroen station wagon with the hydraulic lift and jump seats in the back. That thing was a tank!
ReplyDeleteThe French couldn't build a car, gun, or a machine to save their ass... I once went 84 mph in a Simca(look that one up!) and was as close to death as I have ever been... Cheese and wine is all they can be trusted with..
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a black 1984 Pontiac Fiero with a t-top. Sweeeeet. Total guy magnet too! Well, until it fell apart practically overnight, then it was just embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is one beautiful vehicle. I must admit this is the first time I think I have ever laid eyes on one.
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a hand-me-down from my Aunt when I was Freshman in college. It was an '84 Buick Skyhawk. Oh the memories bring a tear to my eyes.
1982....Volkswagen....Rabbit....Pickup Truck....Talk about an ill conceived form of transportation!
ReplyDeleteDr. Zibbs: Yes I saw the picture. Have you ever driven a Chevette? ;)
ReplyDeleteChris - I'm kidding because they're both crappy. I have driven the Chevette. Crapola.
ReplyDeleteWhere I grew up, the only foreign cars that were allowed were Volkswagens. As Vince will tell ya', the Germans always make good stuff.
ReplyDeleteMine was a VW Dasher. Blue. 4 on the floor. Manual steering. Manual breaks. You didn't really need to use the clutch to shift, just ease up off the gas, let the revs drop, and ease her in.
HA, my mother had one of these when I was in my late teens (1983/1984). I hated that car.
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a 1976 Datsun B210and I loved that car!
ReplyDeleteMine was a 1978 Chevy Nova. It got me where I was going, but it was no chariot. I actually got some girl to buy it in around 1992, but the engine blew up on her a week later. Sucker :)
ReplyDeleteWWW - the Nova seems to be another popular one.
ReplyDeleteI had a 1979 green Honda Civic Hatchback, 4 speed manual transmission. My parents bought it for me and I think they paid about $800 bucks for it. It had no muffler which turned out to be a good thing, it may have taken a lot of "off road" adventures through fields, country roads and pastures. Hey, what can I say I was a 16 year old Hick Nebraska farm girl and happy to have a car! Now I am a 34 year old Hick Nebraska farm girl but at least I now drive a nicer car.
ReplyDeleteI sooo wanted a LeCar, but alas- I had to settle for a shit-brown 1984 Chevy Citation hatchback. We called it the 747 because once it got going, it sounded like an airplane. It died shortly after the time I accidentally threw it into reverse at 55 mph.
ReplyDeleteMy second car was a navy blue Chevy Nova- not the cool 70's-early 80's kind, but the kind they made in 1987 that looked like a Corrolla.
Man, no lie- I LOVED that car...
I had a 1966 Mustang.
ReplyDeleteI sold it for 200.00 because it stopped running.
As I look back upon that time, I could kick myself in the ass.
Lesson learned.

This guy I know used to have a grey Renault LeCar, at parties people used to pick it up and move it as a joke. Ha!Ha! Unfortunately after about the 100th time of "misplacing" his car the humor wore off. Oh hey, that was you!!! Still makes me laugh!
ReplyDeleteMy 1st car was a Toyota Corolla, and so was my 2nd. My current car is a Chevy Cavalier because Toyota pissed me off (long story).
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a green golf volkswagen mk4. I loved that car!
ReplyDelete1980 VW Scirocco, Red. I loved her, and I still dream of her.
ReplyDeleteLeCar?! For reals? The name couldn't be more obnoxious, written across the sides. Ah, Zibbs...
Kimme - I always thought those Sciroccas were pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a 1958 Studebaker Station Wagon. A block long, it could sleep 6-8 at the beach. It looked like a tank, especially since the color was olive drab. It could run over a Le Car and I wouldn't even feel the bump.
ReplyDeleteCan you say "vette?"
ReplyDeleteChevy Chevette.
My first car was a Ford Fairmont station wagon. It was yellow and "still in the crate" as pictured HERE.
