Wow. Sesame Street is 40 years old today. Here are a few of my random thoughts about the show. What are yours?
- I always hated Big Bird. He should be called Big Dummy.
- Maria was hot*.
- Why was Mr Hooper such a crabby a-hole? When he died, I did zero mourning.
- Coolest characters: Grover, Kermit and The Yip Yips.
- Best Sponsor: The letter "W"
- Catchiest song: "I've Got Two Eyes - And They're Both The Same Size" (A clear smash on pirates)
- Jump the Shark moment: The arrival of Elmo.
- Best Sesame Street Parody: The Burt Is Evil website. It's been around for years. Check it out here. You've got to see this site.
*Look at that picture of Maria. What does that remind you of? Huh? Huh?
..and I hate Oscar too.
ReplyDeleteYes, Grover IS the coolest. Maria still looks pretty damn good these days. And my sister and I used to play a game called Mr. Hooper in my grandparent's garage (which magically transformed into his store). It somehow involved a stool/chair combo that I inherited. Yay for me!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Oscar called Big Bird "Big Dummy" in Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. Best Xmas movie of all time for kids. I have it memorized word for word...no lie. Watched it every year since it debuted (1978?). If you haven't seen it, it's a must. Mr. Hooper. David. Maria. Susan. Bob. Kermit. Grover. Snuffleupagus! And a bunch of kids who, like me, are in their 30s now.

ReplyDeleteI LOVED Grover. I had a book called "The Monster at the End of This Book." The book consisted of Grover trying to convince you not to turn the pages because there was a monster at the end of the book. He tried everything, including bricking the pages shut, to keep you from turning the pages and thereby getting closer to the monster.
ReplyDeleteIn the end it turned out that Grover himself was the monster at the end of the book. Whew.

Big Bird might have been dumb, but can you imagine if he ever got angry?

It used to frustrate me that no one ever saw Mr. Snuffalupagus. It was too f'ing convenient that he managed to leave just before somebody arrived - you could never count on the guy.

ReplyDeleteI remember having nightmares about Bert when I was about 3. I used to dream that he'd pop up beside my bed with these big evil neon yellow eyes and I'd end up running, screaming into my parents room.

I never liked Big Bird either. Cookie Monster was always my favorite, followed by Grover and The Count.

ReplyDeleteI once went to a Henson family wedding and got to dance with the dude who inhabits Big Bird. As I recall, he was short. Anyway, that's one of my major claims to fame. That and the fact that my ass was once in a picture with George Clooney. I know, I know, stop bragging.
