I Admit It. I'm Addicted To Twitter. Chester County And Beyond.

HI. I'm @DrZibbs and I'm addicted to Twitter. But I really don't feel guilty because I always have my computer on at work and at home and I also have Twitter on my blackberry. So pretty it's pretty much always there. It's great for multitaskers.

When you try to explain Twitter to people that aren't on it they look at you like you're crazy. The way I look at it is that there are hundreds of people in my Twitter network that are talking about stuff. And I can chime in at anytime, usually with a smart ass comment. It's probably like the party lines of the 80's that I never went on because I wasn't a loser...OK..It's probably nothing like that but..

The people I follow are either locals, people that follow my blog, people that are really interesting or funny and some professional comedians and actors that are funny.

On the local scene it's been great. I've probably met about 30 people in the area in real life that are on Twitter. And everyone's been respectful of keeping my Dr Zibbs identity a secret.

On Thursday I was sitting out with my wife at Kildare's in West Chester having some drinks and saw 3 people from Twitter that I've met. Then I saw someone I've never met but introduced myself. It's always great to see the reaction on someone's face when I say, "I'm Dr Zibbs".

Then on Friday I was having a beer with a friend and when he left, I told someone on Twitter to meet me at Ryans Pub. The next thing you knew there were about 10 people there including a few more that I've never met in person.

On my @FatherKelly account I tweet stuff that's intended to be funny. It's a great creative outlet. I've met and have corresponded with some professional comedians that follow me and have told me that they think I'm really funny. So, I've got THAT going for me.

No time to edit this post to make it interesting but there you go. I'll probably think of more things to say and ad them to the comments section.

I'm also addicted. It's just so fun. haha

Alice you better get to a treatment center. Your addiction is just not normal.

uh..nevermind..don't worry...you're OK.

It truly is addictive. And I'm amazed at the amount of friends I've made as a result. A few I've met IRL; others I hope to meet IRL soon.

But you're right. People look at you like you have a third head when you try to explain it. My husband totally doesn't get it. But he's tolerant (for the most part).

And don't even get me started on trying to explain a Tweet-up.

Dr Zibbs said...

Stacey - my wife is tolerant but she hates when I tweet on my phone when we're out somewhere so I've been known to go to the bathroom to "check on things" on occasion.

And you and Alice are on my list of people to meet. I met @Higgimonster for the first time on Friday night.

Jay was also getting all bent out of shape when I was on Twitter while we were out together. So I had to get him involved. That's worked better than I thought. Now he knows all of the same people and it's made it so easy to go out spontaneously because you KNOW someone else is hanging out somewhere in town.

Do you think all towns are like WC? Or do we just have an unusual amount of super-cool people who happen to "get" Twitter?

Dr Zibbs said...

Abel- I did have a conversation with someone from Philly that's on Twitter concerning the large West Chester Twitter community and she thinks it's pretty unique.

I do like to watch when new people appear in my Twitter network and see how they found me as well as when people I follow start following a new person that I follow.

I wish I had a person that could track it for me with charts.

Stacey said...

I wish I could get B into Twitter but he just won't budge. His lone tweet on his account just makes me sad.

I can tell you not all towns are full of super-cool people. MontCo isn't nearly as hip as ChestCo, sad to say. I'll just have to continue schlepping to WC for the occasional Tweet-ups. Hopefully I can drag his sorry ass out at some point.

Stacey - my wife says she has no interest in meeting the people I know on Twitter but she probably will as I get friendlier with people.

And I don't blame her. If she was on Twitter and I wasn't I'd be like, "I don't want to meet a bunch of strangers that are going to be talking about stuff that I have no interest in."

For me it would be like having to go to a work function and hang out with people I don't know. But we're usually pretty honest with each other when the people we have to meet are interesting so that makes it a bit easier.

Dr Zibbs said...

...Come to think of it, if it were just a few people we were meeting she'd probably go.

Today I heard myself explaining how I went from "Twitter, no way" to "Twitter, all day (if I could)." I sounded like an ass. I can't justify it or explain it and my husband is ready to kick me to the curb at the mention of Twitter, but there it is. And here I am.

Maybe West Chester is ground zero and you should start a support group for twitter addicts. We could all choose something else to be addicted to instead. It's 15 miles, but I'd make the trek. Especially if I got to choose something awesome to get addicted to, like knife fighting or learning the mandolin.

In the meantime, if somebody can get me to stop thinking in 140 character chunks, I'd be delighted.

Well read hostess - well what's your twitter name??

I'll throw you a bone, Zibbs. WRH = Jane, from Jane, You Ignorant Slut. @JaneatJYIS

Dr Zibbs said...

Jane - thanks but TBY doesn't need any "bones thrown". You have soooo much to learn.

Dan @ Jane, You Ignorant Slut said...

Zibbs - This is Dan. I'm the one throwing you the bone. Please try to keep up.

You could do worse than a bone from me.

Dr Zibbs said...

Dan - so the two of you have a combo blog?

It will take a few times of commenting for me to remember this. I'm stupid.

A and B said...

ROFL! You and Stacey are on my list to meet too. We should all do it together! Um...Meet, that is. hahahaha

Dan @ Jane, You Ignorant Slut said...

Yep. I think you're old enough for this reference - SNL's Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin used to do a skit debating current topics - Dan would sometimes begin his rebuttal with "Jane, you ignorant slut."

Jane's idea for the blog, actually. We even had our first podcast recently that if you're really a former/current man of the cloth (spandex does NOT count), you might find of interest: http://bit.ly/aLW4PV

Dan @ Jane, You Ignorant Slut said...

A & B - You talking about Jane? Me? You already know Zibbs, right? Also, A - you send those files over yet?

There are like 2 people I know IRL on my twitter account. I really should try to keep up.

I know what you mean when you say when you Twitter, people look at you like ; do you have time for this ??
Some people go out for a smoke, I Twitter.
Same amount of time ; not so bad for your health !
...
It's gettin' even to the point that people who know me and see me with my camera, phone etc. ... ask me to write something about them/or not, take a pic or start to strike a pose :-)
...
I need to Twitter a bit more ; recently I haven't spend that much time on Twitter ; I'm glad to say though I re-opened my 1st (old) Twit-account again and this after six months ! Yay !!
Somehow it just started working again ...brought back some good old memories ... *sigh*

Dr Zibbs said...

Dominica - you mean people ask you to tweet about them? If so that's kind of weird.

Gage said...

you know I still don't really get Twitter even though I use it... I MUST be getting old now, I mean I just can't grasp its usefulness!

O.K. now I have to go think of something to write on my twitter.

Dr Zibbs said...

Gag - you need to follow more people and also comment on what people are saying. Then it'll start working for you.

Also, did you see that a keeper of a Lawrence Welk blog is now following my blog?

Shelle-BlokThoughts said...

Hi, my name is Shelle and I am also addicted to twitter. That feels so good to admit, now do I have to travel the road to recovery or can I ignore that step?

Alice said...

Dan - I mean you, Jane, Me, Betsy, and Stacey! And ChesterCo_Pa too!! Let's make a party of it. haha

Also, I'm waiting on Zibbs for the pic. But, I've got a few others. I'll send them tonight when I get home! Appreciate the help!!

oh and by the way, weirdest thing... have you ever hit the next blog button on your site? Cause it leads almost exclusively to mom scrapbooking blogs and religious family blogs...

Twitter is like a never ending stream of private jokes that I need to get in on. It's just. so. attractive.

ChesterCo_PA said...

Hi Alice - ChesterCo_PA and AbelPetSupply are both me -- Lindsay! Would love to meet you too! You're amk195, right? Are you in the DrZibbs Fan Club? There is a meeting coming up. And by fan club, I mean we (CC Hawt Chix) stand around and fan him. Like a God. That's how you meet him.

Dr Zibbs said...

And you gals are really good at taking turns with the fans. Really. You are.

ChesterCo_PA said...

You love us. You really do.

A and B said...

HAHAHA Can I be in the club, Zibbs?

~Alice (aka amk195)

Dr Zibbs said...

A and B - You can be in the club. As soon as you buy a THAT BLUE YAK shirt. Or if you're cheap, you can get the mug or button. But they're only for REAL cheapasses. Like people who shop at Boscovs.
