Popeye, Gumby and Zippo Lighters

Did you know that Popeye made it's first appearance in the comics on this day in 1929? Yup. And to tell you the truth I never really liked Popeye. I did however like the Sea Hag and Alice the Goon that were on the Popeye cartoon. In fact, that weird chin that the Sea Hag sports is one of my favorite features that some old people get. I hope I never look like that.

I do have a Popeye Zippo lighter so I guess I don't dislike it that much.

A show that reminds me of Popeye is Gumby. The reason is because when I was a kid waiting for the bus, it was either Popeye or Gumby that would be the animation that was showed during Philly's Captain Noah Show....or was it during the Captain Kangaroo Show? I forget. Anyways, here's the theme to Gumby. After making sure nobody's listening, sing along!

It was Captain Noah and you're making me feel all nostalgic today. Red, and Yellow, and Pink and Green, Purple, and Orange, and Blue..I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow...

Small one - I was going to ask if you know how to sing a rainbow but apparently you do.

Sigh....how could you not like Popeye! I was fascinated by his big arms and the pipe that stayed in his mouth when he talked. "I y'am what I y'am". All those heroic exploits. He was the only cartoon character I could draw. But I'm remembering cartoons, not comics. And who was that little baby (Sweet Pea?)that always crawled around at Olive Oyl's house? Was Popeye the father? And I vaguely remember a dog -- was he named something like Jeep?

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comments. I LOVE That Blue Yak.

As Arnold said, "I'll be back".

I've just discovered gadgets and added followers to mine...please help my page not look so pathetic.

My older sister took all the Gumbys and made me play with the Pokeys.

Thanks for reminding me of this. :-(

@Scope - And the problem with that was....? I dunno, I always liked Pokey better than Gumby. In fact when I was eight I had a dog named Pokey (but that was for a whole different reason) :-)

As for Popeye, ick. I used to watch that before school too after Star Blazers was cruelly taken off the air (sniffle) which still pisses me off because I never found out how it ended!! So, you know, I kind of have a grudge against Popeye over that. But making up perverted lyrics to Popeye's theme song with all the neighborhood boys was always fun! So, at least Popeye was good for THAT.

Hey, speaking of perverted lyrics, did you check out the blog parody yet? Hee hee. Sorry, I couldn't help myself! :-)

I wasn't a hugh Popeye fan either (and Olive Oil got on my nerves, frankly!) but I sure did love Gumby.

I love me some Gumby. And when I was 6 and had an operation, Captain Noah wished me a speedy recovery on his show. It was the most famous I have ever been or will ever be unless I become a rapper and get shot.

WWW - that's funny that you say that because I had surgery when I was younger. For a broken heart. Because Captain Noah never mentioned me. Stupid sea fairen bastard.

I wasn't a Popeye fan either, but I watched it because it was on.
